Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search box is sent directly to the outside provider operating that tool. The provider processes the query and returns its results. We do not keep a separate log of those search terms.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email may be retained long enough to read and answer it. Messages remain within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our systems automatically receive basic technical information when a page loads:
- The IP address assigned to your device
- Which browser you are using and its version
- Your device type and operating system
- The pages you visited and how long you stayed on each
- The site that sent you here, if any
- Timestamps for each page view
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small device files that help measure page use, popular content, and exit points. Analytics providers combine this traffic information for reporting. A browser can block cookies, although some functions may then work differently.
What We Do With This Data
- Keeping the site up, running, and loading quickly
- Sending your search requests to the right partner service
- Figuring out which pages people find useful and which need work
- Tracking down and fixing technical issues
- Showing ads that may line up with your interests
No Criminal-Record Data on File
Marion County Criminal History does not keep, assemble, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It identifies official routes to the Marion County Sheriff, Iowa District Court, Iowa DPS Division of Criminal Investigation, and Iowa Sex Offender Registry. We are not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and visitor data is not turned into a consumer report or a record about another person.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the embedded search tools. Their privacy terms, retention periods, and sharing choices govern information entered there. Read the provider’s policy before sending a query because we do not control those practices.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to the Marion County Sheriff, Iowa court portals, state agencies, legal-aid resources, or outside search tools. Once another site opens, its policy controls the visit. Review those terms before providing personal information.
Advertising providers may use their own systems to measure activity across sites and select ads.
Who Might See Your Data
Personal data is not sold. Limited information may be available to:
- Search partners that handle queries you run on our site
- Analytics services we use to track traffic and performance
- Ad networks that place ads on our pages
- Law enforcement or government bodies when a valid legal order requires it
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable safeguards are used for information we collect. No internet system can be guaranteed secure, so these measures cannot promise that unauthorized access will never occur.
Users Under 18
This resource is intended for adults, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If such data is identified, a deletion request may be made.
Your Data Rights
Applicable privacy law may provide additional rights based on a visitor’s location. The Iowa Open Records Law, chapter 22, governs access to records held by Iowa public offices, not data kept by this private site. Iowa Code section 692.2 controls dissemination from the state criminal-history repository, while section 692.5 lets the subject access and challenge their own Iowa DCI record. For information held directly by this site, you may ask to:
- Ask for a copy of what we have on file about you
- Have us fix information that is wrong
- Request that we erase your data
- Opt out of certain kinds of data processing
